At Spiritrun Registered Alaskan Malamutes, we will only breed a litter of puppies with the intention to keep something for ourselves, because the quality and integrity of our breeding program depends on it. We are always evaluating puppies, from birth, based on their emerging personalities and developing conformation. We officially evaluate our puppies between 7 and 9 weeks of age and we invite the opinions of other breeders to assist us in our assessments. Show quality and performance puppies are chosen first, and pet puppies are placed on the basis of suitability for their new home and family's lifestyle. We base our pet placement decisions on suitability of temperament first, all other considerations come after.

We breed individuals who have attained at least a championship title in their country of residence and working or performance titles - ideally both. Our foremost objective is to produce Quality Alaskan Malamutes who exhibit correct breed type, temperament, health and who are structurally sound. We hope that Spiritrun Alaskan Malamutes will be good ambassadors of the breed, become cherished members of their families, spirited workers and live long, healthy and happy lives in the homes we select for them.

We strive for healthy dogs and do our best to avoid the hereditary problems that exist in the breed. As with any breed, Alaskan Malamutes have their share of certain hereditary disorders for which responsible breeders should be screening in their breeding stock. The Alaskan Malamutes used in our breeding program obtain the following health certifications/clearances:

• Eyes are examined free & clear of inheritable eye disease by a certified veterinary ophthalmologist and the Canine Eye Registry Foundation (CERF)
• Hips are evaluated through the University of Pennsylvania (PennHIP) program
• Hips, elbows, thyroid and hearts are certified clear of inheritable conditions through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA)
• Our dogs are certified free of Chondrodysplasia (dwarfism) risk (<6.25% probability) through the AMCA CHD program

Spiritrun Alaskan Malamute puppies are born and raised in our house (note: not a garage, barn, shed or kennel out-building) and are the top priority in our lives while they are with us. Early socialization in the beginning weeks of their lives is critical, so we ensure each puppy receives ample opportunity for socialization in a variety of settings while in our care.

We release our puppies to their new homes after 12 weeks of age, never earlier. This ensures they have received optimal rearing by their dam, early socialization, pack interaction, bite inhibition, crate training and allows us to begin their vaccination program in the safest and most effective way possible.

It is way more work for us, and way less work for our puppies buyers.

It has been seen, time and time again that the transition into the new home is far more smoothe and the disposition of the puppiy is remarkable more confident. Trust us on this one.

At around the 8-week mark, our puppies are examined by a licensed veterinarian. During this exam their overall quality of health is evaluated, hearts are checked, patellas are palpated for luxation, they are again dewormed (a protocol we follow from 2-weeks of age onward), are micro-chipped as a form of permanent identification, and they are vaccinated with a modified-life parvovirus and distemper vaccination. We follow and enforce a modified vaccination protocol as suggested by Dr. Jean Dodds and the World Small Animal Veterinary Association.

Our 'pet' puppies are registered on a non-breeding agreement with the Canadian Kennel Club and must be spayed or neutered. We must do our part to stop the unnecessary breedings which contribute to the onslaught of dogs that end up in shelters and breed rescue. Canadian Kennel Club registration papers are presented to the owners within 6 months from the tranfer of ownership of the puppy (federally enforced in Canada).

Our puppies are fully guaranteed and if, for any reason, one of our adopters has to relinquish ownership of their dog, we will take him/her back without hesitation.

We rarely ever ship, and will only consider doing so for experienced, reputable show, working or performance homes with whom we have a trusting relationship or who can provide excellent references.

For pet inquiries that require shipping, we would prefer to refer you to a reputable breeder closer to your home to avoid having to put a puppy on a plane.
