Over the long weekend in February, The Township of Georgian Bay, the Honey Harbour Community Co-Op and Spiritrun Kennels host the Honey Harbour Winterfest and boy do we have a good time!

On Saturday, we gather in the park with many of our dogs present to receive thousands of pats and to give sled rides to children and adults alike. It is a constant flurry of activity and we were so blessed over the entire weekend with the most pristine and perfect winter conditions you could conjure up. The dogs were incredible ambassadors for our breed, with many malamute-friends present to educate the public about our incredible, albeit challenging breed. And of course, we would be remiss if we did not mention the delicious fish fry -- a feature of the day that rivals the dogsledding rides. Yes, the fish fry is "that" good!

Saturday evening was a pot luck gathering at the home of at our Spiritrun home. We reviewed the amazing photos that Tanya Hawley shot all day, tasted various wine and beer beverages and simply socialized. It was a great night as it always is.

Both Sunday and Monday (Family Day holiday in Ontario) continued to deliver sunny, cold and snowy winter conditions and the trails around Spiritrun were in the best shape they have been in for years! Suffice to say, we took full advantage and everyone got out on the trails to learn dog-sledding, refine their skills, try ski-joorring or go snowshoeing. Our weekend is designed for pure, unabashed FUN. There is no competition, no timeline, no restrictions, other than be responsible with your dogs, safe on the trails, respectful of others in passing and patient while teaching or learning. It is a no pressure weekend, and when the weather co-operates, it is one of the most fun weekends possible.

Thank-you to everyone who attended and assisted in making this weekend an outrageously fun and successful three days! There are so many of your to name, so know that I am grateful to each and every one of you for your contribution, your willingness to help and play and for your smiles. Did the dogs have fun? YOU BET! We are grateful to the Honey Harbour Community Co-Op and the Township of Georgian Bay for making this weekend possible. It is our opportunity to "give back" to a community that allows us to thrive with what we do. A huge shout-out to the Hamilton Venture Scouts who come back year-after-year and help out like it's nobody's business. To say a Venture Scout troop has become our family is so wonderful -- these kids have grown up before our eyes and with our dogs. They assist with set-up and take down at the park for Winterfest, assist with dog training, management and chores, assist with trail maintenance and grooming and contribute a great deal to the fun quotient of the weekend. Words are not enough to thank them for all they do for us! We look forward to next year!

Most people look up and admire the stars; a champion climbs a mountain and grabs one.
We have just returned from another wonderful Westminster Kennel Club dog show experience. This was Elliott's year and he made us proud. Elliott, Am Can Ch Spiritrun's Grandstand Man, CGC, had not been shown since the fall at the Nationals, but despite the hiatus, it was clear he was excited to play in the rings again. Although he was not selected as the winner of the breed on the day, it was clear that he was a strong contender, sound in conformation and aesthetically in full bloom; and beyond all of that, he was excited and happy to show and showed well. It was a small entry of dogs and bitches, but strong in quality. It always gives me such pride to look up and down our breed line-up, and to be impressed with the quality of the exhibits. I just wish more Alaskan Malamute breeders and exhibitors would choose to attend this showcase of shows.

This was the first year that we showed at the new venue, Piers 92 & 94. Breed judging now includes class entries, provided they have won a minimum of one major, which can make for some exciting upsets! Our Samoyed friend Stan, Am Can Ch Vanderbilt's Stand By Me, breeder-owner-handled by my travelling companion, Judi Elford, finished his AKC Championship by going Winner's Dog at Westminster. That has a sweet ring to it!

It was critical that I attend this year, with a dog, to get a clear understanding of this new change of venue, to scope the terrain and figure out the logistics. It was a smooth operation and the only negative was that Elliott despised the shuttle bus experience both over to the Piers and back. He is not used to "city bus" travel and it really rattled him. Fortunately, he was able to recover quickly. Perhaps next year, we will order up our van out of the Valet and drive over to the Piers. Something to consider.

The benching and vendor booth was a marked improvement in comparison to years past over at "the Garden". Vendor booths were more abundant and accessible both to exhibitors and the public and the benching set-up was far more spacious -- you could BREATHE!

Elliott absolutely loved the attention he received on the bench all day long. He was a perfect Ambassador for he breed, as were all of the other malamute entries. And as always it was fun to talk and share laughs and good times with fellow malamute breeders and exhibitors. Thank-you to our NY-friend, Fran, for bringing us some baked goods to enjoy. It is a long day, after all. Congratulations to everyone who competed this year!!!

The highlight of our trip was being invited by NBC Sports to participate in a little fun bit for the Westminster telecast, called Best In SNOW! The producers wanted to take advantage of the snow scene in Central Park and invited a few "snow" breeds down to frolic and burn off some energy -- they even "sent a car" for us. We all piled in a Pet Taxi and headed down to the park for this fun shoot. The dogs had a blast! Elliott and Stan were even being recognized on the street as we were packing the van to leave NYC as "those Snow Dogs we saw on TV!"

Westminster has come and gone for another year and we are already excited about next year. There is something very addictive about this show!

Life can be found only in the present moment. The past is gone, the future os not yet here, and if we do not go back to ourselves in the present moment, we cannot be in touch with life. ╰☆╮Thich Nhat Hanh
Goodness me, it has been over a year since my last post! Needless to say, the puppies that we had last January, 2012 have all gone to their new homes and are blossoming into amazing young dogs.

Everyone here is doing well. We had a fairly quiet and uneventful year in 2012. I have been busy developing a new business venture and Edmund has been busy building a new house (for resale, not for us).

I attended a small handful of shows in 2012: Westminster with Cassie in February where she won a Best of Opposite Sex; the Purina National in March; the Canadian National in May where Shelby finished her Canadian Championship; and the American Nationals in October where everyone in our "camp" placed in their classes. It was a good year -- quality over quantity.

Overseas, beautiful Izzy produced a gorgeous litter of puppies, sired by Chase, for our good friends at Laouen Ki Kennels, Didier and Guillaume. Here in North America, Elliott spent his summer holidays at Nyrakym-Samaljankan Kennels in New Jersey with Karyn and Jari where he sired a stunning litter of puppies out of their red beauty, Bijou. We are certainly excited to see what these puppies turn out like as they mature!

And back home, the geriatric unit continued to thrive. With three dogs in their 15th year, one in his 12th, another in her 10th and one in her 9th, it is clearly evident that we are top-end loaded with the invaluable geriatrics and feel so blessed each and every day to have them in our lives.

As I write this, I should be packing my bags, as Elliott and I join Judi and her Sammy's on our annual epic adventure to New York City for the Westminster Kennel Club dog show. We are always excited to make this journey. I will owe you a follow-up blog entry next week when we return!

Cheer us on via live-streaming video on Tuesday February 12th at www.westminsterkennelclub.org!!!!

It has been over a year since we were blessed with a beautiful litter of puppies. Beautifully timed, Libby, AKC-pointed, CKC Ch Spiritrun's Riddle Me This, delivered a healthy brood of six puppies last evening -- 3 boys and 3 girls. The delivery was successful and unremarkable. Libby continues to impress me with her calm, cool, collected maternal instincts. I slept the night beside the whelping box and not a peep out of her content brood. She is attentive, warm and certainly not lacking in milk supply. The babies are strong and beautiful and are all nursing well.

So much has happened over the past few months, since I wrote our last entry! Unfortunately I have no Nationals or Regionals show photos to add at this time because the show photographer skipped out half-way through the event and will not return anybody's contact attempts. Unbelievable and so very disappointing.
Cassie, BPIS BIS AKC/CKC Ch Spiritrun's Singular Sensation, wrapped-up a very successful year by attending the Eukanuba National Championships with me in Orlando Florida, just before Christmas. We exhibited over the course of four days as three Orlando area kennel clubs hosted all-breed dog shows there as well. She was in very good company with exceptional "bitch specials" to compete against. It was nice to see that each day, a different, yet equally deserving bitch won Best of Opposite Sex. Cassie was one of them. It is nice to compete in good company with healthy competition. We are very proud of her showing -- beautiful as always.
Cassie, Shelby, Spiritrun's Cool Ride, and I reluctantly travelled to the Elora gorge shows between Christmas and New Years. Though I dislike showing that week, the turnout was amazing. Cassie won 2x best of Opposite and 1x Best of Breed. Shelby won a Reserve Winners Bitch and a Best of Winners for her first points. Both girls show great!
Cassie put a wrap on her 2011 run as #4 overall Alaskan Malamute and #1 Alaskan Malamute Bitch for 2011. Not bad for a veteran! We have received confirmation that her entries made it into Westminster again, so we will be in NYC for that prestigious event in February of 2012. We are very excited about that! Please, Cassie, hold coat!
Our family enjoyed a lovely holiday season -- we wish everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
Our first sledding event of the year had to be cancelled due to lack of adequate snow and trail conditions. This as been a strange winter, to say the least. Today is brilliant, sunny, crisp and white, while tomorrow calls for warmer temperatures and rain.
Ah well....Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.  ~John Ruskin

Most of the Spiritrun gang recently returned home from the Alaskan Malamute Club of America Regional & National Specialty week in Ypsilanti, MI. What a time was had by all. Huge thanks to Kathy Mudryk, great friend and dog-family, who house, dog and cat-sitted the remainder of our pack for us. That took the heartache and worry out of the trip knowing they were in good hands.

We spoiled ourselves and rented a Damon Outlaw toy-hauler which fit our ten malamute entries and all our gear quite comfortably. That rig is definitely on my vision board to acquire in the next couple of years. Goal is to drive our very own Outlaw to the Nationals in California in 2014.
We had a large entry of ten malamutes ranging in age from 11 months to 13 years. Most everyone placed in the ribbons in their classes and/or made the cuts. Edmund and Colleen Belanger became fast studies of the finer points of grooming and being stellar ringside assistants. Collen Stone bonded beautifully with Bea and handled her better and better each day...or should I say she behaved better and better for him each day. His handling skills are cream-of-the-crop, but her attitude is, well, her attitude. And I am forever indebted to good, scratch that, great friends Karyn Colman and Nancy Zinkhan for putting on the brave face and taking Silly-Dilly (Dylan) into the ring for his first foray into dog shows. Alisa Syar, Mike Stone, Pam Kovac and Bob Sturdivant, our amazing extended dog-family, were also on hand to walk, cuddle, hold things, spray things, brush things and basically do whatever was asked of them and for that, guys and gals, I am so thankful. xo

We were very proud of these girls. And Gabby showed beautifully yet did not place as we are still spoiling her for putting in so much effort with her nine Lichen puppies, therefore she was not back into "show condition" quite yet.

We were also incredibly proud of Deuce and Madison for being presented with their SERVICEABLE ALASKAN MALAMUTE AWARDS at the banquet. Many thanks to Colleen & Dave Belanger for being a "dream come true" home for our dogs and for accomplishing so much with them! They are the 2nd and 3rd Alaskan Malamutes to earn these awards!

Thank-you to the photographers who took the photos in our slideshow below, who were generous enough to share with us and allow us to share with you. Kat Copley-Holland, Jennifer

Next year:: Chattanooga TN and we are super-excited for that trip already!!!

Cassie, BPIS BIS A/C CH Spiritrun's Singular Sensation, has had a great couple of weekends this September since emerging back on the scene after her summer off. At the Sudbury Shows she won two Group 1sts, under judges Mike Jackman and Anna Hewson, a Group 2nd under judge Fred Gordon and a Group 3rd under judge Richard Lake. The nest weekend out we were at the Burlington Kennel Club shows and she won a Group 2nd under Donna Conod, a Group 1st under Cheryl Myers-Egerton and another Group 1st under Jacqueline Rusby. She then went on to win....BEST IN SHOW...September 25, 2011...under judge Cheryl Myers-Egerton. We cannot express how thrilled we are that this singleton puppy has blossomed into everything a breeder could dream of. She is certainly following in her father's footsteps (the multi BIS BISS A/C GCH Spiritrun Marlaynes Tobe Tyler). GIRL POWER!!!! (photos to come)

We had a successful weekend in Hamilton with everyone on our string doing something! Thai, the golden, finished his Canadian Championship and picked up 2 BOB's; Bailey, the malamute, finished hers by winning a BOB; Marky Mark, the malamute, picked up points towards his by winning 2 BOB's, but it was Jazz, the golden, who had the banner weekend winning 3 BOB's and a Sporting Group 3rd. Way to go Jazzy!

The Spiritrun gang had a great weekend in Corunna, MI. On Friday at the back-to-back GLAMC (Great Lakes Alaskan Malamute Club) Specialties, 'Elliott' won RWD in the first show and then won WD, BOW in the second show (both 5-point majors) to finish his American Championship from the Bred-by class. Later that day he earned his CGC, with no preparation. His 'stay' was weak, but his recall was the cutest thing I have ever seen in my life. I might have to get a video of him doing his recall, Elliott-style, one of these days. 'Elliott' is now American/Canadian Champion Spiritrun's Grandstand Man, CGC.    The next day 'Deuce' and 'Lucan' placed first and second respectively in the Open dog class, both owner-handled, and 'Deuce' went on to win the 4-point major going WD/BOW with Colleen Ann Belanger handling. 'Lucan' earned various placements in Open class all weekend with Annika Card piloting him. 'Elliott', in his debut as a special, made the cut in breed, both times out and showed very well.

A huge THANK-YOU to Janette Slusher and the Great Lakes Alaskan Malamute Club for their wonderful weekend and hospitality. We loved the venue and the prizes were amazing. Spiritrun votes for this venue for future GLAMC Specialties!

We also would like to extend a 'Bon Voyage' to Darren, Annika and Lucan as they embark on their year-long journey to New Zealand! Have a great time, guys, and post a lot of updates and photos on Fb!

Man oh man, have I slacked in the blog update department lately. I feel like I am pretty scattered and juggling a few to many balls. I have been traveling to shows with Cassie, Elliott, Beatrice and occasionally even Crystal, quite a bit this spring. In fact, you won't find me at home on weekends and I am very blessed to have my very own Edmund to keep it all running smoothly in my absence. Here are some highlights of our recent shows:

Purina National - Am/Can Ch Spiritrun's Singular Sensation, Cassie, wins Best of Breed all three days over a very competitive entry and goes on to win a Working Group 2 on Saturday night at the Purina National under judge A. Zee and a Working Group 1st on Sunday under judge C. Myers-Egerton. This is a very prestigious show in Canada with an international panel and large, competitive entry, so suffice it to say, it was a thrilling weekend! And miss Beatrice made her show debut at this big overwhelming show and managed to attain her first points. Yay Bea!

American Shows - Ch Spiritrun's Grandstand Man, Elliott, and Cassie have been in the US regularly, too as Elliott is working on completing his AKC Championship. He picked up points in December in Cleveland, a reserve to a major in Connecticut River and then collected both of his majors at Syracuse, leaving him with now only one point needed to complete, we think :-/ Crystal, at 12.5 years old, came with us to Connecticut River Working Dog to compete in Veteran's Sweeps. She came 2nd in her class on the first day and won her class the next. She had a ball!

Just this past weekend we ventured through Algonquin Park to find ourselves in Petawawa for the Champlain shows. Cassie earned a Working Group 4th under judge D. Windsor and Bea worked on her ring skills. We were the only mal entry. Six month old Golden retriever, Thai, was handled by me and won the Puppy Sporting Group on Friday in show #2 and his first points by going WD/BOW/BP on Saturday. Yay Thai!

Sipping my coffee now before bathing the crew for our annual trek to Harrisburg, PA for the Specialties there. Crystal, Elliott, Cassie and Bea are all entered. All I know is I need a bigger van...
